Thanks to the help from individuals, families, students and businesses, our third annual Food Drive to benefit the two Chandler food pantries will help care for more than 90 families in need!
Chandler Elementary has been a partner with us for the past three years during our Food Drive. They have collected more than 3,500 items through their efforts! This year, the Kids 4 Kindness committee organized the school's food drive.
Four businesses competed to see who could collect the most items for a chance to win a batch of cinnamon rolls. A huge thank you to Culligan Water of Chandler, Powerline Freight Systems, LNB Community Bank, and Hi-Tech Sheet Metal for collecting 218 items altogether! Culligan was our winner, collecting 72 total food items.
As a way to further engage citizens, we added a Food Drive Scavenger Hunt to our efforts this year. Teams of up to 4 people went out into the community in search of particular types of food items to help earn points. Teams with the most points, most food items, and most total weight of items were awarded prizes, which included free one-hour passes donated by Elite Air of Newburgh; no team was allowed to win in more than one category. We had eight teams participate, collecting a total of 653 items and 700 pounds of food and personal care items to be donated! Girl Scout Troop 363 dominated the event, collecting 231 pounds; Nancy Daniel's team collected the most items at 83; and the McDaniel family scored the most points, thanks to some hair dye, good use of a $5 Walmart gift card, and some high-scoring items.
Thank you, again, to everyone who helped in this effort! The need continues to grow in our community, and we hope that you will think of the Chandler United Methodist Food Pantry and the Chandler Cumberland Presbyterian Church Food Bank as a worthy cause to support throughout the year!
This year's Chandler 8K Run and 1 Mile Walk, held Saturday, Oct. 21, brought a record registration number of 59 participants and raised $1,300 for our Be the Change in Chandler Playground Project. A huge thank you to our sponsors this year: St. Vincent Evansville, Hi-Tech Sheet Metal, Perfection Driveline, Taber Corvette Parts, Koehler Funeral Home-Perigo Chapel, and LNB Community Bank. We would also like to thank Faith Free Will Baptist Church for organizing the event.
The race offers a challenging course along rolling hills just north of Chandler and the walk loops around the Chandler Town Park. Top overall male and female in the 8K were Chris Willis of Boonville, 33:01; and Robin Souders of Elberfeld, 36:58. Shawn Smith of Boonville placed second overall with a time of 33:11. The top finisher in the 1 Mile Walk was Gavin Zint of Boonville, 12:12. More race results can be found here.
4 A Better Chandler is currently working to raise money for Phase 2 in the Be the Change in Chandler Playground Project, which will provide a three-bay accessible swingset with safety surfacing; this equipment is for ages 5 and up. Phase 1 was completed earlier this year and included a new, inclusive play structure and swings for younger children.
Thank you to the Warrick County Standard for publishing a wonderful article and photos from our Grand Opening Celebration!
Our first wheelchair-accessible picnic table was delivered to the Chandler Town Park yesterday. This table took 1,100 pounds of plastic lids for recycling! In addition to the recycling, there is a discounted price we pay for the benches or picnic tables; this table was purchased by the Town of Chandler.
If you and your family have been saving plastic lids for us, Thank You! We are continuing our efforts to collect plastic caps and lids to provide additional picnic tables. Collection boxes for your plastic are currently located at: Chandler Town Hall and Chandler Library. If you are interested in placing a collection box at your place of business or would like to sponsor a picnic table or bench, please contact us. Details on the types of plastic that can be used for this program can be found here. Thanks for joining our mission to make Chandler better!
It's been a busy summer, so we have lots of things to catch you up on! Along with participating in National Night Out, planning future park improvements with town officials, and getting things organized for our upcoming events, here's what we've been up to...

Phase 1 Playground Opening
Our Be the Change in Chandler Playground - Phase 1 had a soft opening a few weeks ago. The additional equipment was installed, inspections were completed, and the rubberized safety surfacing was poured. Phase 1 of the project is designed for children ages 2-5 years old. Our young citizens have been enjoying this dedicated space while we put the finishing touches on our final projects for this space.
Benches and additional signage should be installed next week, and other improvements in this area will include painted games like hopscotch, a marked walking path, and a tricycle/power wheels/small bike obstacle course.
We are so grateful to the donors, sponsors, volunteers, and greater community for your support in getting this project completed!
Our Grand Opening event for Phase 1 will be held on Friday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Chandler Town Park. Please plan to join us to celebrate this community project!

For a preview, here's a listing of our gracious donors and everything included in the auction:
Although we had hoped to have the playground open with pour-in-place rubberized surfacing installed by Memorial Day weekend, that will not be possible.
While the playground structure was properly constructed, it was installed at the wrong height. To meet the strict requirements for safety and accessibility standards, more equipment must be installed. Thankfully, we had planned margin in the budget for unforeseen expenses, and the equipment has been ordered. Now, we are waiting for it to arrive. Once the new equipment is installed, we will move forward with the pour-in-place surfacing and opening the playground.
This is not the first obstacle we have had to overcome in building a new playground, and it likely will not be the last, but let us assure you we remain committed to building a safe and accessible playground for children of all ages and abilities.
While we wait for the new equipment to arrive, we will continue with other site improvement projects, including a walking path, tricycle path, and signage, so that we can have a grand opening when all improvements are completed for Phase 1 of the Be the Change in Chandler Playground Project.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project so far, and for your support as we work toward completion on this phase. Please plan to attend our upcoming events and fundraisers that will continue this important work in our community!
